On Conjugacy Separability of Fibre Products

چکیده
In this paper we study conjugacy separability of subdirect products of two free (or hyperbolic) groups. We establish necessary and sufficient criteria and apply them to fibre products to produce a finitely presented group G1 in which all finite index subgroups are conjugacy separable, but which has an index 2 overgroup that is not conjugacy separable. Conversely, we construct a finitely presented group G2 which has a non-conjugacy separable subgroup of index 2 such that every finite index normal overgroup of G2 is conjugacy separable. The normality of the overgroup is essential in the last example, as such a group G2 will always posses an index 3 overgroup that is not conjugacy separable. Finally, we characterize p-conjugacy separable subdirect products of two free groups, where p is a prime. We show that fibre products provide a natural correspondence between residually finite p-groups and p-conjugacy separable subdirect products of two non-abelian free groups. As a consequence, we deduce that the open question about the existence of an infinite finitely presented residually finite p-group is equivalent to the question about the existence of a finitely generated p-conjugacy separable full subdirect product of infinite index in the direct product of two free groups.

متن کاملVirtual retractions, conjugacy separability and omnipotence
We use wreath products to provide criteria for a group to be conjugacy separable or omnipotent. These criteria are in terms of virtual retractions onto cyclic subgroups. We give two applications: a straightforward topological proof of the theorem of Stebe that infiniteorder elements of Fuchsian groups (of the first type) are conjugacy distinguished, and a proof that surface groups are omnipotent.
متن کاملConjugacy Separability of Some One-Relator Groups
Conjugacy separability of any group of the class of one-relator groups given by the presentation a, b; a m , b n 1m, n > 1 is proven. The proof made used of theoretical combinatorial group methods, namely the structure of amalgamated free products and some properties of the subgroups and quotients of any group of the class of one-relator groups given above.

In this note, we give characterizations for certain HNN extensions of polycyclic-by-finite groups with central associated subgroups to be subgroup separable and conjugacy separable. We shall do this by showing the equivalence of subgroup separability and conjugacy separability in this type of HNN extensions. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary 20E06, 20E26; Secondary 20F10, 20F19

LetM be a closed, orientable, irreducible, geometrizable 3-manifold. We prove that the profinite topology on the fundamental group of π1(M) is efficient with respect to the JSJ decomposition of M . We go on to prove that π1(M) is good, in the sense of Serre, if all the pieces of the JSJ decomposition are. We also prove that if M is a graph manifold then π1(M) is conjugacy separable.
